elections

So has election fatigue kicked in yet?
Two days to go and still there seems no sign of the Assembly elections bursting into life.
Not one story has really grabbed the attention during this election campaign - which is a shame when you consider the likelihood of a low turnout.
This is a tricky time for newspapers when you have keep a particular eye out to ensure political balance - we have to question every letter we publish, judge each story and the involvement of each politician in that particular story.

I feel that our politicians are still failing to engage in a modern way.
Like everyone else I have had bundles of political mail dropping through my letter box.
But was there anything that sparked that extra bit of interest, anything that really woke me up to a particular issue?
Was there any clever use of the new media possibilities?
No this has been a pretty drab affair which has made our lives as journalists difficult as we try to engage reader interest.
Our politicians have a lot to answer for on this front.
Today we print four messages from our party leaders. To a casual reader there is genuinely little difference between them in terms of policy.
Last Saturday we published an interview with David Cameron on his visit to Barry. He was uttering the same words about social responsibility, being tough on crime etc that I heard from Tony Blair in City Hall about a fortnight previously.
That is why the population is losing faith in our politicians.
They are becoming cardboard cut-outs, trotting out the same messages with very little difference between them - and even less character.
