tony blair in cardiff

Tony Blair was in Cardiff today for the Chamber of Commerce's inaugral Callaghan Lecture, a high profile annual new event which will welcome an internationally-renowned figure to the city to make a speech.
The Prime Minister was, as you would expect, impressive in his public performance, bouncing into City Hall with a wave and a smile.
One of Blair's strengths was always his ability to perform in front of an audience and I have to say he was pretty impressive, even when a solicitor dealt him a potential tricky question about cuts to Legal Aid.

Blair's reply? 'I'm also a barrister and one of the first things they tell you is never to be nasty to a fellow lawyer'.
That immediately took the sting out of the question and gave him the opportunity to deliver an honest answer.
This was a high profile event which 'sold' Cardiff well. Tony Blair was very complimentary about our city, recalling his other visits to City Hall and meeting Nelson Mandela.
We need more events like this, that bring world leaders here to the Welsh capital, to make landmark speeches that attract global media attention. It says good things about Cardiff and hammers home the message that we are a European capital.
Congratulations to the Chamber of Commerce for a job well done.
