School closures and maggots

Posted by The Echo Editor on March 8, 2007 11:40 AM |

Today on page three of the Echo we print a disgusting picture of a chicken tikka wrap covered in maggots.
This was the same wrap that one of our readers wrapped his mouth around and bit into.
The shop which sold this disgusting item was fined £250 in court.
One of my conundrums this morning was whether I should have published the picture of the sandwich.
After all, for many the sight would have turned stomachs - and I was risking alienating some readers with queasy stomachs.

In my mind, the picture added weight to the story and painted a picture which words are simply uncapable of doing.
As we state in our editorial comment today, a fine of £250 for an offence like this is simply not enough. Customers have to have confidence in the food industry - and that has to come from the knowledge that the law is being followed. A slap on the wrist like this does not give credibility to that line of thinking.

School closures are still on the agenda in Cardiff. The problem of empty spaces at schools has not gone away and will be tackled.
I sympathise with the council on this - it is absolutely something they must tackle but equally by doing so they will without doubt alienate certain communities.
For our part on the Echo we are reporting on the situation fully, with as much detail as possible for parents and staff alike.
Today we reveal that four secondary schools will shut, though they have not yet been named.
This will now begin a guessing game in our communities, which in itself will be unsettling for pupils, parents and staff.
The sooner the information is made public, the better.
