A year ago the Echo was reporting on serious concerns that the new 24-hour drink laws would change the face of our city centre.
Readers told us of their concerns for safety, health issues and the staff working in our pubs and restaurants.
Today, we are pleased to report news that a partnership between police and licensees seems to be working and is attracting national attention.
The police say that their new approach is reaping benefits and making the city centre a safer place to be.
This will be good news for older people in particular, who regularly tell us that they fear going into the city at night.
This also gives Cardiff a great platform to show the national media that this is a safe city - and we are glad to see that Trevor McDonald's Tonight show will carry that very message this week.
Over the weekend I attended the launch of the city's Winter Wonderland, which this year is bigger and better with the introduction of a new Santa's Grotto.
The Wonderland is by now a cornerstone of Christmas in South Wales and it is great to see the positive impression that visitors to our city get from it. It portrays Cardiff in an excellent light, showing that we are a fantastic, modern city that can compete with the best when it comes to events.
The Winter Wonderland gives shoppers and families alike another reason to visit Cardiff this Christmas.
And I bet that only a very few will look as bad as I did on the ice rink!
